Well, I've never had the "privilege" to administer any "real" servers,
just my own workstations. But hey have often had a lot of services
running when I've changed the hostname. I've never seen any problems
with it.

Frankly, I would have expected Firebird to detect this and act
accordingly, even it it were forcing an immediate shutdown.

But I wouldn't know the problems involved of course. Development wise I
mean.

My point is that maybe it's not all that strange that someone, e.g.
Nick, would be unaware that there's a risk involved in doing what he
did. It's not obvious.
