My mistake, sorry.
I was using "trusted authentication" on one end, which resulted a user
named "douglas". On the other end I was using plain old sysdba.
Confusing, I'd say, since both users have admin privileges.
But monitoring is alright.

btw, the good news is that indeed 2.5 consumes *a lot* less memory to
monitor 10K objects.
