Yes, that's what we use. However, what I don't know is how the
workaround in Firebird works. I'd like to get a better understanding to
know how it might affect us since we're using data journaling.

By default, journal only journals metadata (i.e. directory structure),
so writing data has nothing to do with it. Use forced writes or mount
the filesystem with 'sync' option or use "full data journaling" feature
of ext3 if you want to be sure.
