There is more than just that guardian option problem.
After I detected this on first install, I followed your advice and did
a "clean" reinstall and definitely have no Guardian around. But I
still have the zombies.

Right now I cannot remember the exact date of the fix/changelog entry.
But I can look it up if I find the time. IIRC it has been Nicolay or
Dmitry who has confirmed that. At that time, 1.5.3 was the most recent
version of that branch.

Mitch: you definitely have your reasons to not use 2.1? If you do a
new installation on a new box in any case, you should really consider
an upgrade of the fb server as well.
