I don't know whether current versions of Firebird still do that or
not, but AFAIR there was a time when using a UNC path would cause the
client to find the machine sharing it, translate the path and try to
use a Firebird server installed there. This seems compatible with the
situation the OP has described.
Not that this helps much anyway...
