You say "known limitation" - does that mean that it's in the todo list
to support this? When, 2.5?

Also, as I wrote NOT BETWEEN seems to work OK (haven't actually
checked is the resultset right one, but it doesn't throw error). Is it
bug?

And what is the recommended/most efficient way to achieve the query then?
