You don't have to start it. It is already running.

The default root directory where Firebird is installed is c:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_2_0.

Just ignore the Control Panel Applet. It should not be there for a Vista installation.

The Firebird service is running. You can check it in the Services Applet.

Tell us what you are expecting to happen when you "start" Firebird. That might help to get everyone on the same page.
