Then check the notes in the installation section of the release notes. In brief, the NPTL implementation in the 2.4.n kernel was unstable. The install notes have instructions for reverting to 2.2.5 behaviour if you can't upgrade to the 2.6 kernel, which requires using the linuxthreads version of Firebird.
