A VPN (I use OpenVPN) is the broadest solution. It allows
you to connect one entire network to another, so your solution
can work for Firebird and other applications too. One very
convenient aspect about VPN is that many firewalls etc are
already designed to know about VPN and ready to help you get
it working.

Note that I had reason recently to investigate satellite
internet connections and read that VPN can have performance
issues on such long latency connections. See:
http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/34579/127542.html
for an explanation. I was able to avoid a satellite
connection so cannot give you any personal feedback on that
issue.

OpenSSH or some other SSH tunnel (I used to use PuTTY under
Windows) is OK for a one-off, single application requirement
but can become less convenient when the situation gets more
complicated.
