I can't imagine how anyone would find such a thing useful.
Why not provide some kind of filter and always only load the first few
dozen matching records? If the user can't find the desired record there,
he'd (implicitly by scrolling down) request the application fetch more
records. Or provide better filter criteria.
But I understand - you're not in charge of the specification.
