You don't need to build yourself Firebird
You can use the build Firebird project provide

I try to follow the different port and for what I know (except for Mandriva because they
work in coordination with us) there is sometimes little problem to solve

With Debian / Ubuntu it seems that their last package is ok (names of these packages are
firebird2.0 (http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/misc/firebird2.0-super) don't use firebird2
which is in fact Firebird 1.5 and have some problems as Helen said)

For FreeBSD, their last port is nearly ok, despite the fact that you need to change the
owner of the security2.fdb file and you have to setup yourself the inetd config

For Suse, the rpm need some maintenance, and it is hard to reach someone at Suse to get
the work done, but as I said, the builds provided by the Firebird project are ok

For RedHat, Fedora, Centos, situation is nearly the same as for Suse, but it seems that
the following repository have a good package for Fedora
