I do have the beta, that is not the problem.

I needed the embedded, so I just went to (instead of searching for the
announcement mail):

http://www.firebirdsql.org/

selected the link for Pre-release kits (testing) on the left, which
gives me a directory listing??? and if I follow that I get the access error.

Either the "Pre-release link" on http://www.firebirdsql.org/ should be
removed or it should get to whatever page were one is allowed to
download from.
