I've been follwing this thread for a while now.
How long does it take if you just telnet to port 3050 of the firebird server?
Have you tried using a non-local machine (eg your own laptop) to connect to the
firebird server? If yes did you face the same problems?

I'm just poking around since I can't really think of anything that wasn't
already mentioned which would cause these problems. All my firebird servers run
on linux and I've never experienced anything like that, regardless if the
firebird server is accessed locally or remotely by windows or linux clients.

Are you really sure that there is nothing irregular between the client or the
server? Maybe you can just try using a crossover cable to rule out any network
related problems.
