I would be totally astonished if Microsoft did anything that simple or transparent with its path transformations. Assuming that the latest tricks in the Vista Mystery Package are anything like symbolic links would be a fast-track to horror, methinks. POSIX systems have hard-and-fast rules that are known to (or at least knowable by) anyone. MS builds minefields.

Aliases are ideal for making clients capable of accessing multiple flavours of filesystems, including just about any idiosyncratic variation that Redmond wants to try on to reinforce the myth that without Vista, one is without a future.
