Adam, thanks for following up. I had failed to say that I tried my
tests with the fdb files in both the networked folder and not in the
networked folder, and with aliases pointing to each. All four tests
had failed (although I only reported on the Z-drive ones).

In any case, the problem turned out to be that I needed to
specifically add the fbserver.exe to the firewall "exceptions" list,
as you noted in your list of suggestions. Now the test program (using
the alias to the non-networked directory) runs fine.
