I heard of problems with the firebird apt-get versions on ubuntu before.
Try using
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/firebird/FirebirdSS-1.5.3.4870.nptl.i686.tar.gz

I know that this one works on ubuntu (at least with ubuntu 6.06) as i
used it.
