I think I found the problem. Our system admin started running Nesus against
our system. The time of the run and the FB server shutdown coincide. I had
him stop the run and will see if it stays up.

If I had to guess, I would say a bad (corrupt) record version is
encountered within one of the databases by your daily backup or some
other scheduled task, causing the service to shutdown and guardian
restarts it immediately.

Have you checked firebird.log?
