Thanks. In the meantime, I've completely deinstalled the Ubuntu
Firebird-related packages and installed the distribution from the
Firebird homepage. The latter setup asks for a password, indeed, while
the Ubuntu setup set it to 'masterkey' in SYSDBA.password.
