What did you change to get it working?

Normal (issues by DDL statements) metadata changes are all
handled within the engine, direct updates to the system tables
aren't handled as good, so that might explain the restart or
disconnect/connect you had to do.

Thanks for the response, but I finally got it to work. I stopped the
server's Firebird service and started it. I've never had to do that
with metadata changes before.
