It is equally important to design your datamodel so it is distributable.

A centralized datamodel does not generally scale to distributed without
attention to the issues of distribution.

I understand you problem - my first database application was for
construction site tracking. The communications tower generally went up
about 2 weeks after we left the site.

This is easier since you are using strong upstreaming, but you must
still pay attention to the datamodel.
