Yah, I know. The field is wide open, and our resources are limited. So
I'm hoping that the group knowledge would give us a starting point,
rather than us just picking any variable (file system? Kernel? NPTL?)
and modifying it.

Hi Rick,

I've had only good experiences (none of what you're describing) with
ReiserFS. There's too little info in your email to elaborate further on
what may be the cause of the poor response you're experiencing.
