Thanks to both Nando and Adam. I see now that the startup of the connection pool using the .Net provider locks the DB file in such a way that the OS explorer window does not receive the event to cause a redraw. The property window does however see the change. Once the pool is cleared the event is then passed to the explorer window.

where are you looking at the file size? Windows Explorer is known in
that it doesn't update the file size until the file is closed. The
File Properties dialog is usually more up to date. In any case, don't
rely on the reported file size to judge whether the data has been
written to disk or not.
