Hardware, but it has nothing to do with Firebird. Software RAID may not
save you if a crash occurs somewhere in the file system driver.
Hardware RAID 5 with 3 x 15K RPM SCSI drives would be a good start.

But without giving us any idea of what your software does, what is
being stored in the database, and the sorts of loads you expect. Any
database is going to have some Disk I/O bottlenecks, so in general the
faster, the better.
