nobody appears to know. Yet I read about this phenomenon in this list
quite often. I gotta investigate more I guess.

A> SS doesn't open it exclusively, it must at least allow reading.

yes that's what I meant. But allowing reading doesn't mean allowing
other processes to *lock* the file. I might try several combinations
of flags to get a clearer picture.
