I used to have problems with FB and RedHat some time ago. The problem
was very similar of yours.

I don't remember exactly what version i was using, but it was probably
RH9 and FB 1.5.

Anyway, compiling and installing a new kernel over the original one
solved my problem all times. Maybe you should try this.
