Lester -
I have written some stored procs that return self-referencing tables as
result sets. Is this what you mean? I don't exactly understand your
reference to hierarchical date. I have also worked with CONNECT BY in
Oracle, and my stored procs do pretty much the same thing. As I recall, the
procedures allow you to select parents, children, or both.
I implemented these recursively, and I faintly remember that there might be
some issues with nesting too deeply. I never pushed such structures with
too many records.

Has anybody played around with an alternative to
Oracle/Postgres CONNECT BY when looking at hierarchical date?
I suspect something on the STORED PROCEDURE line is required as I can't
see that it can be done with a UDF?
Can anybody point me in an appropriate direction with the tow of their
boot ;)
