This is true, but it is more work for the server than for a client
initiated commit or rollback. The other thing of note is that Firebird
must maintain backversions of records on behalf of transactions that
may be interested. Keeping transactions open for longer than necessary
will limit the garbage collection, so you may be experiencing the
consequence of lots of garbage.

Poor transaction management will not affect the consistency or
durability of Firebird but it will hurt the performance.
