Megan,
Why are you copying the file to a remote location? It sounds like an
offsite backup (always a good idea), but if that is the case you can
just use gbak. The file is significantly smaller and you don't need to
disconnect or shut anything down to run it.
Gbak + 7zip generally reduces a 40MB database over 10X.
