A very simple mistake,

c:\data\faultydb.fdb

was backed up to

c:\backup\faultydb.fbk

was then restored to

c:\restores\fixeddb.fdb

Then a connection was made to c:\data\faultydb.fdb and gee what a
surprise it didn't fix itself.

Ask them to zip up the backup file and email / ftp / post it to you
and see for yourself. We used to have an internal flag for support
issues defined as PEBKAC, it was selected more often as the cause than
any other option.
