Yes, in Linux they don't have an embedded.so, most of the 'embedded' need in
linux seem to be easily handled by Classic in it's native form.

> Would building a classic embedded do as I've described?

Probably. To be honest, you would need to talk to the firebird developers.
I remember some really good discussions about this same sort of stuff back
when embedded was first release. You'd probably do good to try to read the
archives of this list for around that period of time. Sorry I can't offer a
time frame or anything else to help you find the discussions. They are
already vague in my memory, I just remember reading them with about as much
eagerness as I'm reading this thread... I found it and this thread of real
interest.

I believe the most recent versions of firebird for Windows ship with
Classic, so Classic can infact be built for Windows. I imagine that if it
can be built for Windows it wouldn't be too hard to build it in a dll that
sets-up the virtual middle-tier that you need.

Probably right. I think the embedded that we have today is a result of what
was available then (only SuperServer for Windows) and the demand for
embedding the server. I think that same demand has moved from just wanting
embedded to wanting multi-user/application (obviously from same machine)
embedded.
