Subject RE: [firebird-support] Upgrade table structure

Gustavo,
I first got the full definition by searching using Google, however since
then, I have bought
Helen Borrie's Firebird book from the IBPhoenix site and have learned quite
a lot more about
what DDL commands are available.

I didn't previously know that you could alter alter the position of a field
within the table structure
using the alter command and this has been a useful find.

I recommend this book as a source of much useful information, it is really
the only complete
reference to Firebird available to the best of my knowledge.

Graeme

Hello:

I agree that updating RDB$... tables may not be a good idea. But I didn't
knew the DDL statement Graeme mentioned to alter a field definition.

> ALTER TABLE <TABLE> ALTER <FIELD> TYPE <NEWFIELDTYPE>
> This is the syntax for changing a field type.

Can you tell me where can I find the complete syntax for this statement?
I didn't find it in the documentation of InterBase 5 or in
"Firebird_v15.108_ReleaseNotes.pdf". Perhaps I have to get documentation
more up to date. By the way, can anyone tell me which is the most recent
InterBase version which documentation is applicable to FireBird and which is
the link to download it?

Gustavo
