Ah.

Are you using the Superserver? If so, you need either
a) to use the NPTL build
or
b) to set the Red Hat 9 system to use the old threading model. There are
instructions in the full 1.5 release notes (found in firebird's docs
directory). Search (Ctrl-F) for 'NPTL'.
