Installing on XP is easy.
Download the win32 installer from here:
http://firebird.sourceforge.net/index.php?op=files
Double click the executable and follow the prompts.
Also take a look at the quick start guide.

Access to the db happens over port 3050, so if you have a firewall,
make sure it lets that port through.
telnet localhost 3050
will let you know if it doesn't.
XP is a lot simpler than 2003, because it is unlikely that you will
get file system permission errors.
