Perhaps you could do the encryption in the client instead of the database.
Here is a package for Delphi which does several types of encryption:

If you are using linux try downloading and using
http://www.ibphoenix.com/downloads/FreeUDFLibC-0.8.tar.gz which contains
the function f_encrypt_md5.
