One of the design requirements for Firebird 1.5 was compatibility at the
file level with InterBase 6.0x and Firebird 1.0x. The major new feature
of Firebird 1.5 - not visible to users, but critical to our development
plans - was a conversion from C to C++ as the implementation language.
That change seemed sufficiently high risk - and some of the risks seemed
sufficiently obscure - that we chose to to keep the file format stable
so that, in case of emergency, users could revert to V1.0x or even
InterBase 6, painlessly.
