Are you sure it is Norton AV and not Norton Internet Security? NIS is a
firewall and he will need to configure it to allow LAN access to the server
via TCP port 3050.

With NIS, yes, with NAV on its own, no. He was silly to uninstall
Norton: to test his theory, he only needed to disable it (right click on
the tray icon and select Disable).
