The gdb file is part of the system restore in XP and ME and is automatically
backed up by the
system when it thinks that it has changed. This is why firebird changed its
extension to fdb.
I have seen a startup time of about 5 mins on a slow ME system because of
this in the past.
I don't know if it applies to 2003 server also, but I would assume that it
does.

Change the file extension to fdb, and your problem will probably
disappear.
Windows uses the GDB extension to keep track of something else (slips
my mind at the moment, I think it is rollback info but someone can
correct me). Basically it keeps on copying your file :)
