I see that when I try to SUBSTRING and there is no 'string' to 'sub' or
the string is too short.
Not sure that it SHOULD complain, but since I normally expect an answer
in that situation, it normally means I've not picked/joined the correct
record anyway ;)
I end up with a check on the data which only processes it if it exists.
