Oops, sorry.

But that makes me believe that what you describe is a bug that is more
important than I first thought (provided others can verify your
findings, without anyone being able to explain why your result is
correct). If changing from 'outer join' to 'join' had solved the
problem without changing the result, I'd say the bug had been almost
'cosmetic'.
