Subject Re: [firebird-support] Firebird #2 Open Source Database, within 1% of MySQL

Of course it's nice to read such a report from a marketing point of
view. Every time FB is mentioned in such a context is good. Free
publicity. Like they say, you don't exist if they don't know you.

But actually I think the value of such a research is zip. It only
reflects the respondents. And who are these respondents? Does the
outcome really reflect the penetration of the databases?
As for results, have a look at the news archive on IBPhoenix
(http://www.ibphoenix.com/main.nfs?a=ibphoenix&page=ibp_old_news&next=Y&skip=30).
It urged us to vote in this poll in which we lost to MySQL with one vote
the previous year. And how are the results from this year's poll?
the results:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=272098
IBPhoenix has yet to mention it on their site and I don't blame them.
For what is the value of such a poll in which only a 'certain' group
participates other than showing off in a marketing pitch?

It's very difficult to know what db is most widely used and for what. As
for me, I think Firebird is very very good (for what I'm using it for).
It's fast, reliable and simple to maintain with a lot of mature
features. It's a database I can rely on.
I just read an article about Wiki. Their database halted due to power
failure (yep). It took them ages to recover (used MySQL), cause their db
had been corrupted by the outage. They must have wished for a moment
they had used Firebird and had they known that with FB they could just
have restarted the server.

I often wondered why there isn't a certain kind of feedback form with
the Firebird download on which 'customers' of the download can fill in
their intended use and maybe their comparison of Firebird against other
db's they use or have knowledge of. Maybe also a field on want to have
features.
My penny in the bucket.
