Whenever I get this message it is because I have not started the
firebird server.

I'm guessing you are trying to run the firebird server on Windows. If
it is not set up as a service to automatically start you could try one
of the following:

1) Go to control panel and find the firebird server icon. Double click
it and then start the server

2) bringing up a DOS window and going to the bin directory in firebird
and type "fbserver -a"
