This is correct. Technically, ASCII is a precursor to, and a sub set
of, most of the other character sets available. It is only 7 bits in
length (the high bit is always 0).
Most european languages can be represented in a 1 byte character set,
although not all can be represented in the same 1 byte character set.
ISO-8859-1 is the most common 1 byte alphabet in use currently. It can
represent the bulk of european langauges to the extent that they are
understandable, if not % lexically correct.
