No doubt, Firebird or more likely Arno... 850 criteria - I would have
guessed that would explode in the compiler.

I hadn't got to the bit where you mentioned that everything was
serialized. The advantage of classic is a bit more parallelism and, in
the case of local inserts, a much shorter code path. I've been looking
at a problem that involves very high insert rates over short periods of
time, so I have code path length on the brain.
