I thought that the missing double quotes might be the culprit, so I tried it
again. Here's what I got:
C:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_1_5\bin>gbak -b
"d:\Firebird\techsol-host.gdb" d:\Firebird\techsol-host.fbk -user sysdba
-password xxxxxx
gbak: ERROR: unavailable database
gbak: Exiting before completion due to errors

again. Here's what I got:
C:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_1_5\bin>gbak -b
"d:\Firebird\techsol-host.gdb" d:\Firebird\techsol-host.fbk -user sysdba
-password xxxxxx
gbak: ERROR: unavailable database
