From the information I provided earlier, does everything look ok? Can I
safely narrow it down to not a firebird problem, but a server or network
problem?

Some weeks ago I faced a strong slow on performing back-ups on my local
lan, copying files using samba was fast and normal, but back-ups are
10-20 times slower than running against a local database.

Nigel Weeks show me a tip that solved the issue:
On the network configuration dialog turn off the auto-negotiating speed
and set it up manually (take attention to the Full/Half duple point).
Try playing with the settings and see how performs better for you, the
problem in may case was that Windows Auto-negotiation choosed
100mpbs/Full Duplex, when I set it to Half duplex the speed comes back
to normal.

This solved my problem. Don't know if it can help you too.

Don't know why it was fast before and now it is slow, but I never had
noticed that a remote back-up was slow on my lan, so I assume it start
to be slow at some time without some aparent reason.
