I just had the same problem on my Fedora box. Turns out that the
security.fdb somehow was corrupted, and I found that out by looking at
/opt/firebird/firebird.log. Copied from a backup, and it started fine.

No. Sysdba cannot login either.

Using the IP address rather than the server name does not help.
Besides, client has time to try everything, and call for support, so by
that time the DNS service should have started up.
