Subject Firebird 1.5 Mac OSX Version VERY slow
Author Myles Wakeham
We have just completed a plug-in for the cross platform development
language, 4th Dimension, that has a Windows and Mac OSX version. In testing
the demo database that we are using with Firebird, there is a HUGE
difference in a basic query execution between the two platforms.

On a single user, Windows PC we are seeing about a 1-2 second response to
return 5,000 rows of data from a single table database with a simple SELECT
query.

The exact same database on Mac OSX (Panther) has a 11 second response.

Both tests run as LocalHost to the database (ie. On the same box).

There is some difference in the processing power of the two computers, but
not that much. The PC is a 2.8ghz Pentium 4, and the Mac is a 500mhz G4
dual processor box.

Does anyone have any idea why there would be such a difference in
performance? At this level, the Mac OSX port appears almost unusable at
this level.
