and you've got a spare machine laying around, give FreeBSD a shot.
Installing Firebird on FreeBSD involves these highly complicated commands:
`cd /usr/ports/databases/firebird/`
`make install`
It finds the suitable source code, downloads, patches, configures, and
installs, with the above commands.
But it's probably mandated that you use RH9 - just a thought...
