The WINS stuff is SMB. As Uwe says, one machine will act as a 'default'
server unless you switch that function off.

The LMHOSTS file was Microsoft's original replacement for HOST before
they acknowledged that there were international standards to follow ;)

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is another bodge to get the old Microsoft stuff
working. You will find some useful info if you put "netbios over tcp/ip"
into Google.

Fastest method of IP address lookup is in the local HOSTS file, as
windows will now look there first. So setting up fixed local IP
addresses and sharing them in the HOSTS file will cut out a lot of
network traffic ;)
