Hi Thomas,
already have very good options to go on:
2. You can't just upgrade Fb 1.0 to 1.5 without any care: there are
important differences that can make another applications fail.
3. If you can, use embedded for demo versions;
4. Install another instance of Fb 1.5, if there is already a Fb 1.5
version and the user does now know SYSDBA password or if firebird.conf
does not fit for your application.
But removing your application is still a problem that we don't have any
solution. Someone can use your Firebird installation, checkink for any
firebird.conf file on the hard disk, or just manually checking. That
someone could be a good fellow, and just use Firebird, since it's
installed. So, the good decision is always ask the user if they want to
remove it or not.
And give the user the SYSDBA password. Even if your competition don't.
The server and the data belongs to the user.
our product is that we *really* know how to use a SQL Server. ;-)
Firebird is a free and open product, and of course everyone is free to
use it the way he wants to. But if everybody starts using there own
instance of the server the user will have problems for sure, and in the
future we will have this kind of situations to deal with when we discuss
this subject again. :-)
And I also agree that this is not easy. And that this is a problem that
we have to deal with. I'm just saying that even if other people don't
follow the rules, it's out job, as good Firebird professionals, to do it
well done.
( Sorry but I will not be here to continue this so long thread. I'm on
my way to Fulda, to spend a *very good* time with other Firebirdians. )
